Guide to Buy Custom Drums

When I was asked if I’d help out with this feature of buying a custom set of drums, I happily agreed and started to look through their vast online catalog. I was overwhelmed by the quality of the product they sell. For the most part, it reminded me of the products I’ve bought from other drum companies, but they have a vast number of different and unique options that you can’t go wrong. If you want to learn to get the best custom drums, you're on the right page. As you will see from my video, there are many ways to put the look and feel together to make a unique drum kit tailored to your specific needs. As with the other guides I’ve written for Drums, Drumsets, and Percussion, this is also a video I put together to show you some examples of some of the choices. But before we get into the video, let’s take a look at the options available with Custom Drums. In addition to the ‘built to your order’ Custom drums, they also offer: ‘Custom designed’ drums (these are built to your exact specifications and will not be offered by the company again) ‘Drumsets’ which are drums assembled with your choice of hardware and cymbals to give a set of drums a custom look. ‘Individual parts’ such as: shell, hoops, hardware, rims, hardware, hardware racks, and drumheads. Each drum part is assembled with your choice of cymbals and hardware to get your exact look and feel. They also have a full drumshop where you can get:

  • custom drum parts made to your specifications
  • drums assembled in your choice of colours
  • custom custom cymbals
  • custom custom hardware
  • or drum sets made to your specifications.
Here are some examples of what the Custom Drums website looks like.
A lot of what you see is available by clicking the ‘Contact Us’ button on the website, where you can talk to the staff about what you’d like and get their advice on what will work best for your application. Here’s a look at what you can get from the Custom Drums website. First you’ll see a listing of ‘Drums’, which can be customized in several ways. Here are some of the Custom Drums they offer: I’ve already explained what is available for customization and these are just the beginning. The Custom Drums website has thousands of items available for customization, so you’ll need to scroll through them to get the ideas, and then add the details to your shopping cart. For our purposes we’re just going to look at what the kit I’m playing has and add some options, because I wanted a very specific kit that I could get exactly how I wanted. Once you choose your kit, it’s up to you whether you want your drums to be custom built or if you want ‘Drumsets’, which have pre-built cymbals and hardware assembled to you. Let’s look at the drums I want to build my own set, which are the Custom Drums I build in Australia. So we’re going to look at what it’s going to cost to build a drum kit based on what we want. For the price of the Custom Drums, they include: 5 drumheads – you can order a drum set with as many or as few as you want
  • 1 5 1/2″ hardware rack – the rack has 5 1/2″ hoops and the ‘T-bars’ that hold the hardware in place, and are available in Black Chrome, Satin Nickel or Silver Plated Copper (Copper is not included and will need to be ordered separately).
  • The 5 1/2″ hoops are 1 1/2″ high (the hoops are the inside and outside circumference), so you’ll need to either have drumheads made that are 1 1/2″ in diameter or put a slightly thicker drumhead on the drumset to make the hoops look smaller.
  • 5 drumheads will give you the options of ‘C’ or ‘D’ heads and is standard drumhead size, however if you want you can order more heads to get a custom kit
The hardware that comes with the Custom Drums can be specified in a couple of different ways.
